The Cooking Around the World class has been making European pastries. Ebelskivers are round Danish pancakes, traditionally served as a festive treat, especially at Christmas, with a dusting of powdered sugar and jam. Made from a light, fluffy batter similar to pancakes but cooked in a special pan with indentations, they are crispy on the outside and soft inside. The class used chocolate chips inside instead of jam. These are difficult to make, but the students did excellent!
One section of Foods II Class decided to do a mac-and-cheese competition for their grain lab, and the other section made a variety of grain foods, such as banana bread, spaghetti, and muffins. The mac-and-cheese rubric: flavor, texture, appeal, and ingredients. The winner had smoked gouda cheese, white cheddar cheese, bacon, and bread crumbs on top. THANK YOU to our judges: Todd Miller, Colletta Harnisch, and Mrs. Schmitt.
Cooking Around the World is continuing to learn about Europe. The pastries this week were crepes and crème brûlée, both from France. Crème brûlée is a difficult dessert to make and needs to be done just right. Mrs. Schmitt brought her torch from home, and the students had fun caramelizing the sugar on top.
Here are some of the pictures of the students making crêpes. Crêpes are pronounced "krep," rhyming with "step." English people commonly mispronounce it. Thank you, Mrs. Glenn for telling Mrs. Schmitt's students this. They topped it off with fresh fruit, Nutella, and whipped cream. Ooh, la, la!

The 4th graders had such a great time celebrating their 3rd quarter PBIS reward at The Charles Theatre—it was so much fun!🍿🎬 🎉 A huge thank you to everyone who donated or purchased raffle tickets to help make this special experience possible!

FCCLA (Family, Career, Community Leaders of America) is a CTSO (Career and Technical Student Organization) group. New Hampton, along with almost 1,000 other students, merged at Cedar Rapids for the FCCLA State Competition from Sunday, March 22nd, through March 24th. "The days were busy, starting at 7 a.m. and ending at 11:00 p.m. with students competing in Iowa Events and STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) events. It is amazing what FCCLA students learn about public speaking, being a leader, and how to make deadlines for their projects," said Mrs. Schmitt (FCCLA advisor). Kaidance Hall was in an Iowa event for Creed Speaking and Interpretation. Paige Stumme was in the STAR event of Repurpose and Redesign, winning a silver medal. She turned a picture frame into a checkerboard. (see the picture of her project) Wimry Jacobs earned a bronze medal in the Job Interview event. "I am proud of how all of my FCCLA students presented themselves at state. said Mrs. Schmitt. They made New Hampton High School proud!

The pictures show finished cakes and our two STAR winners. The cakes were made by Gianna Aiken & Annabelle Baker and Vanessa Snyder. They put in a lot of hard work, and they turned out amazing!
